A novated lease is an agreement between you, your employer and a lender. It works best when your employer offers salary packaging and you drive plenty.
New, demo or used, petrol, hybrid or electric. Your packager bundles the lease and running costs into one regular deduction.
Eligible electric cars are currently exempt from fringe benefits tax, which is where the biggest savings usually are. The rules are set to change from 1 April 2027, so timing matters.
If you leave your job, the lease stays with you. A new employer can often take it on, or you keep paying it from your take home pay.
Some packagers can novate a car you already own through a sale and leaseback. Your specialist will tell you if it stacks up.
A novated lease isn’t always the best fit. Here’s how it compares with the other ways to finance a car.
Fringe benefits tax, salary packaging and residual values follow ATO rules and your employer’s policy. General information only, not tax advice. Check the details with your packager or accountant.
Get a feel for the lease repayment with a residual at the end. Your packager adds running costs and tax savings, so treat this as a starting point.
Estimate only. Excludes fees and charges and isn’t a loan approval or recommendation. Your actual rate depends on your circumstances.
Two quick steps, no paperwork and no impact on your credit score.
Your specialist compares lenders that write novated leases and explains the numbers in plain English.
Once approved, your employer’s salary packager signs the novation and starts your deductions.

Eligible battery electric cars under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel efficient vehicles are currently exempt from fringe benefits tax. The 2026 Budget announced this will start phasing down from 1 April 2027, with existing leases unaffected. It isn’t law yet, so check the latest rules with your packager or accountant. Plug in hybrids lost the exemption for new leases from 1 April 2025.
