Thinking about a caravan for the summer break? You're in good company. Caravan finance is one of the most searched loan types in Australia as the holidays approach. A caravan loan works much like a car loan, but there are a few extra checks that can save you a lot of money and stress: what your car can actually tow, whether a used van has money owing on it, and what the van really costs to own. Here's how caravan finance works and what to check before you buy.
How does caravan finance work?
Most caravan loans are secured, meaning the caravan itself is the security for the loan. Because the lender can rely on the van, secured caravan finance usually comes with better pricing than an unsecured personal loan. You repay over a fixed term, often with a fixed rate, so your repayments stay the same.
Caravan finance can cover:
- new and used caravans from dealers
- private sale caravans
- camper trailers, pop tops and hybrids
- motorhomes and campervans
- fifth wheelers.
Secured caravan loan vs personal loan
| Secured caravan loan | Unsecured personal loan | |
|---|---|---|
| Security | The caravan | None |
| Pricing | Often sharper | Usually higher |
| Loan size | Can be larger | Usually smaller limits |
| Age of the van | Lenders set age limits | More flexible |
| Often suits | Most new and newer used vans | Older or cheaper vans |
What lenders look at
Every lender has its own policy, but these are the usual checks:
- Income and expenses. Your payslips or business financials, plus your living costs and other debts.
- Credit history. Defaults, missed repayments and recent enquiries.
- The caravan. Its age, price, and whether it's from a dealer or a private seller. Many lenders limit how old the van can be by the end of the loan.
- Deposit. It isn't always needed, but it can widen your options and lower your repayments.
Self employed? If the van is mainly for business, for example a site office or accommodation for a work crew, low doc options may apply. For personal use, lenders will need to verify your income.
Check what your car can tow, before you buy
This is the trap we see most. Under Queensland Government guidance, you should not exceed your vehicle's towing limits as shown in the owner's manual. The tow bar's load capacity must be at least equal to the loaded mass of the trailer (Queensland Government). The government also warns that your insurance may not cover you if the caravan's on road mass exceeds your vehicle's towing capacity.
| Check | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Your car's rated towing capacity | Owner's manual or the manufacturer |
| Tow bar rating | The plate on the tow bar |
| The caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass), its maximum loaded weight | The van's compliance plate |
| How much you'll load into it | Water, gas, food, gear: it adds up fast |
If your car isn't up to it, budget for a new tow vehicle before you fall in love with a van. Some buyers finance both at once, which we can help with too.
Buying privately? Check for money owing
A used caravan can still have a loan registered against it, and if the seller doesn't pay it out, the lender could repossess the van from you. Before you hand over money, run a search on the Personal Property Securities Register using the van's VIN or chassis number. It's quick, cheap and done online. A PPSR search shows if there's a security interest recorded, and if the van has been reported written off or stolen where that data is available. It won't show how much is owing.
If you finance a private sale through a broker, the lender will normally run these checks and pay out any existing finance as part of settlement.
Budget for the full cost, not just the van
| Cost | Notes |
|---|---|
| The caravan | New, used or private sale |
| Tow vehicle upgrade | If your current car can't tow it safely |
| Towing gear | Brake controller, weight distribution hitch, mirrors |
| Insurance | Usually needed for the van |
| Registration | Ongoing, varies by state and van |
| Servicing and tyres | Bearings, brakes and tyres need regular checks |
| Storage | If it won't fit at home |

From the broker's desk
“Every summer we get calls from people who've paid a deposit on a van and then found out their car can't legally tow it once it's loaded. Check the towing capacity first and get pre approval before the caravan show. Then you can negotiate like a cash buyer and know exactly what you can spend.” Dayle Filliponi, Lend It Finance Group
Should you add a balloon payment?
A balloon lowers your regular repayments but leaves a lump sum at the end, and caravans lose value over time. If you choose one, plan exactly how you'll pay it. Our balloon payment guide walks through the risks.
Rates are expected to rise: lock in your repayments
The September quarter CPI rose 4.3% annually (ABS), and another RBA rise on 3 November is widely expected. With a fixed rate caravan loan, your repayments are set when you settle and don't change if rates move later. Already have a van on finance? See our refinance guide.

FAQs
Can you finance a caravan?
Yes. Most new and used caravans can be financed with a secured caravan loan, and older or cheaper vans can often go on a personal loan.
How does caravan finance work?
The lender pays the seller, the caravan secures the loan, and you repay over a fixed term. Once the loan is paid off, the van is yours outright.
How do I check if a caravan is under finance?
Search the PPSR using the van's VIN or chassis number before you pay. It shows if a security interest is recorded against it.
Can I get finance for a private sale caravan?
Often, yes. The lender will check the van and the seller, and pay out any existing finance at settlement.
How old can a caravan be for finance?
It depends on the lender. Many limit the van's age at the end of the loan term, so older vans may suit a personal loan instead.
Can I finance a camper trailer or motorhome?
Yes. Camper trailers, hybrids, motorhomes and campervans can all be financed in a similar way.
